Neunhausen (called Néngsen in Luxembourgish) is a small village in the northwestern part of Luxembourg. This country is located in Western Europe. Neunhausen is part of an area known as the canton of Wiltz. This canton is also part of a larger region called the district of Diekirch.
For many years, Neunhausen was its own separate local government area. These areas are called communes in Luxembourg. Neunhausen was actually the smallest commune in Luxembourg. It had the fewest people and the lowest population density. This means it had the fewest people living in each square kilometer.
In 2011, Neunhausen joined with another commune called Heiderscheid. Both of them became part of a larger commune named Esch-sur-Sûre. So, Neunhausen is now a village within the Esch-sur-Sûre commune.
As of As of 2024[update], about 246 people live in the village of Neunhausen.

Understanding Communes in Luxembourg
A commune in Luxembourg is like a local town or district. It has its own local government that manages things for the people living there. This includes services like schools, roads, and local rules. Luxembourg has many communes, and they are important for local life.
Why Neunhausen is a Former Commune
Neunhausen used to be an independent commune. This meant it had its own local council and mayor. But sometimes, smaller communes join together to form bigger ones. This can happen to make local government more efficient. It also helps to share resources better.
In 2011, Neunhausen merged with other areas. It became part of the larger Esch-sur-Sûre commune. This means that Neunhausen no longer has its own separate local government. Instead, it is now a village within the bigger Esch-sur-Sûre commune.
Villages of the Former Neunhausen Commune
When Neunhausen was its own commune, it included several villages and hamlets. A hamlet is a very small settlement, often smaller than a village. These places were all part of the Neunhausen local government area.
The villages that were part of the former Neunhausen commune included:
- Bonnal (This was the main village where the commune's office was located)
- Insenborn
- Lultzhausen
- Neunhausen (the village itself)
- Bourgfried (This was a lieu-dit, which means a named place or locality)
