The Nevada City Classic is a super exciting one-day bicycle race that happens every year in Nevada City, California. It's also been called the Tour of Nevada City or the Father's Day Bicycle Classic. This race started way back in 1960 and usually takes place on Father's Day. Thousands of people come to Nevada County to watch it! The very first race had about 1,500 viewers, but now over 15,000 people come to cheer on the cyclists. The race is supported by the Nevada City Chamber of commerce. There are different races for everyone, including women, juniors (younger riders), masters (older riders), and the main men's race. Famous cyclists like Greg LeMond have won here!

The Race Course

The Nevada City Classic race lasts for 90 minutes. Riders complete 40 laps around a challenging track. The course is about 1.1 miles (1.8 kilometers) long. It has lots of twists and turns, plus over 300 feet (91 meters) of hills to climb! Experts say this course is one of the toughest one-mile races in the United States. It has stayed pretty much the same since it began.

Race History

The Nevada City Classic began in 1960. It is the oldest and biggest bicycle race on the West Coast. It's also the second-oldest bicycle race in the whole country! A man named Charlie Allert started the race. He was a bicycle racer from Germany. He designed the course himself. The very first race was held on Father's Day in 1961.

The first two races in 1961 and 1962 were won by Bob Tetzlaff. Then, from 1963 to 1967, a young rider named Bob Parsons won five times in a row! John Howard won in 1970. A very famous cyclist, Greg LeMond, won the race three times in a row from 1979 to 1981. He was so important that Nevada City even had a "Greg LeMond Day" to celebrate him!

Other great riders who won include Todd Gogulski, Scott Moninger, Alexi Grewal, and Levi Leipheimer. In 2009, Lance Armstrong raced and won. However, his win was later removed because he didn't follow the rules. Ian Boswell won in 2010 and 2011.

In 1997, the race became a National Classic Pro Points Race. This meant it was a very important event for professional cyclists. In 2010, the Nevada City Classic course was even used as the starting point for Stage 1 of the Tour of California, another big cycling event!
