How Nevada Solar One Works
Catching the Sun's Rays
This power plant uses something called parabolic troughs. Imagine giant, curved mirrors that look like long, shiny U-shapes. These mirrors are designed to focus all the sunlight onto special tubes. These tubes are called solar receivers. They are made of glass and steel and have a special coating to absorb as much heat as possible.
Making Electricity
Inside these solar receivers, a special liquid flows. When the concentrated sunlight hits the tubes, it heats up this liquid to very high temperatures. This hot liquid then goes to a power block, where it heats water to create steam. The steam then spins a turbine, which is like a giant fan. This spinning turbine is connected to a generator, and that's how electricity is made!
Storing Energy for Later
One really cool thing about Nevada Solar One is that it can store extra heat. It uses a technology that puts this extra heat into special molten salts. Think of these salts as a kind of "heat battery." When the sun goes down, or on cloudy days, the plant can use this stored heat from the molten salts to keep making electricity. This means it can provide power even when the sun isn't shining!
