New Athens was officially planned and mapped out in 1817. A year later, in 1818, it got its own post office. This meant people could send and receive mail easily.
Franklin College: A Place of Learning
A very important part of New Athens's history is Franklin College. It was started in 1818 by John Walker, a Presbyterian minister who was against slavery. He was an abolitionist.
The college was open for over 100 years, closing in 1919. During that time, it helped educate many important people. These included two governors, eight U.S. Senators, nine U.S. Congressmen, and twenty state legislators. This shows how much of an impact this small college had on American politics and education.
