New Beaver is a small town, called a borough, located in the southern part of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,370 people lived there. It's also considered part of the larger Pittsburgh area.

History of New Beaver

New Beaver started as a larger area called Big Beaver Township. It was one of the first thirteen townships in Lawrence County.

From Township to Borough

Originally, Big Beaver Township included the town of Wampum. Wampum became its own separate borough in 1876. Around the same time, a company called Wampum Cement and Lime Company started. This cement plant was located in Big Beaver Township, just outside the new Wampum borough.

In 1875, Big Beaver Township had five schools with about 266 students. The average number of students attending school each day was 170, and the school year lasted seven months.

Over the next 75 years, Big Beaver Township saw changes in its population and industries. After two world wars and several economic hard times, the population and businesses decreased. The nearby Borough of Wampum wanted to increase its tax money, so it decided to take over the Medusa Cement Plant from Big Beaver Township. At that time, state law allowed boroughs to take property from townships, and Wampum successfully did this.

Soon after, another borough, Ellwood, started thinking about taking over land south of the cement plant. To stop more land from being taken, the leaders of Big Beaver Township began the process of changing the township into the Borough of New Beaver in 1958. The official document creating the borough was signed on November 18, 1959. However, the community continued to operate as a township until elections for borough officials could be held in 1961.
