How New California Got Its Name
New California was officially planned out in 1853. This process is called "platting." It means creating a map that shows how land is divided into lots for buildings.
According to local stories, the name "New California" came from a traveler. A man was passing through the settlement on his way to California. This news made people choose the name.
Post Office and Mail Service
A post office for New California was opened on January 7, 1850. It helped people send and receive mail. However, this post office closed on May 14, 1904. Today, mail service for New California comes through the Plain City branch.
Historical Marker and Civil War History
On September 19, 2009, a new historical marker was placed in New California. This marker helps people remember important events from the past.
The marker tells a special story about the American Civil War. During this war, 367 men from Jerome Township joined the Union army. This was a very high number compared to the total population. It was one of the highest rates in the entire country. The marker also notes that seventeen of these brave soldiers are buried in the community's small cemetery.
