New Centerville is a small town, also called a borough, located in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States. In 2020, about 127 people lived there. It is part of a larger area around the city of Johnstown. This New Centerville is different from another village with the same name in Tredyffrin Township.

Major Roads in New Centerville

Two important roads, Pennsylvania Route 281 and Pennsylvania Route 653, go through New Centerville. For a while, these two roads run together, which is called a concurrency. In New Centerville, Route 653 splits off and heads southeast towards the town of Rockwood. Route 281 continues northeast to the town of Somerset.

A Look at New Centerville's Past

The history of New Centerville began a long time ago. Around the year 1800, a schoolhouse was built here. A teacher named Jacob Weimer taught lessons to children for many years.

Early Buildings and Town Founding

A church was built around 1813. This church was shared by two different groups, the Lutherans and the Presbyterians. Later, around 1850, the Methodists built their own church. Michael Freeze arrived in the area in 1830. He officially planned out the town in 1834. A tannery, a place where animal hides are turned into leather, was built around 1840 by Josiah Miller.

Becoming an Official Borough

New Centerville officially became a borough on March 6, 1854. This meant it could have its own local government.
