New Creek
New Creek at Keyser, West Virginia in 1996

New Creek is a stream in eastern West Virginia. It's about 18.4 miles (29.6 km) long. This creek is the third biggest stream in West Virginia that flows into the North Branch Potomac River. Through the Potomac River, its water eventually reaches the Chesapeake Bay. This means New Creek is part of a much larger water system called a watershed.

Where New Creek Flows

New Creek begins high up on New Creek Mountain. This mountain is in the northern part of Grant County. From there, the creek flows mostly towards the northeast. It travels through the western part of Mineral County. Along its journey, it passes by the small community also named New Creek. The creek then continues until it joins the North Branch of the Potomac River. This meeting point is in the city of Keyser.

How New Creek Got Its Name

The name "New Creek" comes from an early settler in the area. His name was Peter New. He was one of the first pioneers to live near the creek.

Smaller Streams Joining New Creek

Many smaller streams flow into New Creek, adding to its water. These smaller streams are called tributaries. For example, Thunderhill Run joins New Creek in Keyser. Other tributaries include Stony Run, Parr Spring Run, and Block Run. Hoffman Run and King Run also flow into New Creek near the town of New Creek. Ash Spring Run is another tributary that meets the creek near US 50.

Bridges Over New Creek

Many bridges cross over New Creek, helping people and vehicles get around. These bridges are found at different points along the creek's path. Some are small, like private driveways, while others are larger. For example, the Northwestern Turnpike Bridge carries US 50 over the creek in New Creek. In Keyser, several bridges cross New Creek. These include the Maryland Street Bridge and the Willow Ave Bridge. There's also the Staff Sergeant Jonah Edward Kelley Bridge, which carries WV 46. Even the B&O Railroad has a bridge over New Creek in Keyser.
