New Douglas is a small village located in Madison County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 350 people lived there.
A Look Back: New Douglas History
New Douglas was first planned by Alonzo Foster in 1860. The village was named after Stephen A. Douglas, a famous senator from Illinois.
In its early days, up until the 1900s, New Douglas was important for its local coal mines and farms. But when the need for coal went down in the 1950s, the village went back to focusing mainly on farming. Today, farmers in New Douglas mostly grow corn and soybeans.
Where is New Douglas?
New Douglas is found in the northeast part of Madison County. It is about 5 miles (8 km) east of Livingston. The village is also about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Edwardsville, which is the main city of Madison County. It's also about 42 miles (68 km) northeast of the big city of St. Louis.
The village covers a total area of about 1.05 square miles (2.72 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land, with only a tiny bit of water. The water in the village flows into Silver Creek to the west and into the Little Dry Fork of Shoal Creek to the southeast. All the water in New Douglas eventually flows into the Kaskaskia River.
