History of New Woodville
The story of New Woodville actually begins with an older town called Woodville. This original town started as Harney in 1881. It was later renamed Woodville in 1888, honoring a local settler named L.L. Wood.
Growth of the Original Woodville
Around 1900, a new railway line was built through the area. This helped the town grow a lot! Woodville soon had three newspapers, a place to store grain, and cotton gins. It also had a school and nine brick buildings. Between 1900 and 1907, it officially became an incorporated town. About 300 people lived there.
Why the Town Moved
The original Woodville disappeared around 1943 or 1944. This happened because the Red River was dammed to create Lake Texoma. The dam caused the area where Woodville stood to flood.
About 50 people from the old town moved to a new spot. This new place was about two miles north of the flooded area. This is how New Woodville was formed and became an incorporated town.
New Woodville Today
New Woodville has been a legal town since 2002. However, its town government has not been very active. In 2013, there was a big drought. The water level in Lake Texoma dropped so much that you could see parts of the old Woodville's foundations and storm cellars!
