The New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) is a special government group in Egypt. It was started in 1986. Its main job is to help Egypt use more clean energy from nature. This includes energy from the sun (solar power) and wind.
The NREA works hard to find new ways to use renewable energy. They do lots of research and development to make these projects better. They have helped build many big energy projects in Egypt. Some famous ones are the Zafarana wind farm, the Jabal al-Zeit wind farm, and the Benban solar park.

What is the NREA?
The New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) is like a team that helps Egypt get its power from clean sources. Instead of using fuels that can harm the environment, they focus on energy that comes from nature and can be used again and again. This is called renewable energy.
Powering Egypt with Clean Energy
The NREA's main goal is to make sure Egypt has enough energy for everyone. They do this by promoting and building projects that use solar power and wind power. Solar power uses sunlight to make electricity. Wind power uses big wind turbines to catch the wind and turn it into energy.
The NREA also does important research. They look for new and better ways to use renewable energy. This helps Egypt become more energy independent. It also helps protect our planet by reducing pollution.
Big Projects Making a Difference
The NREA has been involved in many exciting projects across Egypt. These projects are helping to change how Egypt gets its power.
- Zafarana Wind Farm: This was the very first wind farm built in Egypt and even in all of Africa! It uses many wind turbines to create electricity from the strong winds in the area.
- Jabal al-Zeit Wind Farm: This is another huge wind farm. It is known for its advanced technology.
- Benban Solar Park: This is one of the biggest solar power plants in the world. It has millions of solar panels that soak up the sun's energy.
Protecting Birds from Wind Turbines
The NREA also cares about nature. They worked on a special project called "The Migratory Soaring Birds (MSB)" project. This project was done with the Ministry of Environment. Its goal was to protect migrating birds.
Millions of birds fly over Egypt each year on their long journeys. Sometimes, these birds could accidentally fly into the large wind turbines. To stop this, the project found smart ways to protect the birds. For example, they might temporarily stop the turbines when many birds are flying nearby.
In 2020, this project won an important award called the International Energy Prize. It was recognized for saving millions of birds from harm at the Jabal al-Zeit wind farm near Hurghada. This shows that we can use clean energy and still protect wildlife at the same time!
