Station History
The station you see today is actually the second one built on this spot. The first station opened a very long time ago, on November 19, 1836. This was when the first part of the Morris and Essex Railroad line opened, going to Orange.
The current station opened in 1903 after two years of building work. It was part of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad main line. This line connected Hoboken to places like Denville and Scranton. A bridge called the Newark Drawbridge also opened in 1903, connecting the station across the Passaic River.
Over the years, different railroad companies joined together. The Morris and Essex Railroad became part of the Lackawanna Railroad. Later, the Lackawanna Railroad merged with the Erie Railroad in 1960 to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. Since 1983, NJ Transit has been in charge of all passenger train services here.
The station is important for its history. It has been listed on the state and national lists of historic places since 1984. This means it's a special building that needs to be protected.
Modern Updates and Renovation
From 2004 to 2008, the station got a big makeover. Before, it had two low platforms on the outside, and people had to walk across a track to get to the middle track. During the renovation, they built two high platforms. One of these is an island platform, which makes it easier for people to switch trains. They also built new waiting areas for passengers.
Train and Light Rail Services
Newark Broad Street Station is a hub for several NJ Transit train lines. These include the Montclair-Boonton Line and both parts of the Morris and Essex Lines: the Morristown Line and the Gladstone Branch.
Trains from these lines can take you to Secaucus Junction on the way to New York Penn Station in New York City. Other trains go to Hoboken.
This station is also the end point for the Newark Light Rail Broad Street Extension line. This light rail connects Broad Street Station to Newark Penn Station. The light rail service started on July 17, 2006. This connection makes it much easier for passengers to switch between the commuter trains at Broad Street and the trains at Newark Penn Station. Before this, people often had to take a bus or taxi between the two stations.
The station has different levels for trains and light rail.
- The upper level is for the main commuter trains. It has an island platform and a side platform.
- The lower level is for the light rail. It has one island platform.
