Walter Lee "Newt" Joseph was a talented American baseball player. He was born on October 27, 1896, and passed away on January 18, 1953. Newt played as a third baseman and also worked as a manager. He was a big part of Negro league baseball.
Newt was born in Birmingham, Alabama. His older brother, Wilson Joseph, also played in the Negro leagues. Newt spent most of his baseball career with the famous Kansas City Monarchs team. This team was owned by J. L. Wilkinson.

Newt Joseph: A Baseball Legend
Newt Joseph was very popular with fans. In 1923, the Monarchs' train stopped in Muskogee, Oklahoma. It was late at night, but about 200 fans were there. They wanted to cheer for the team. Fans were so excited they carried Newt Joseph from his train seat. They even gave him a special gift!
Playing with the Best
Newt Joseph played alongside and against many amazing baseball players. Some of these players are now in the Baseball Hall of Fame. These include Satchel Paige, José Méndez, and Bullet Rogan. He also played with earlier stars like John Donaldson and "Big" Bill Gatewood.
A newspaper in Utah once called Newt one of the best third basemen ever. This was part of the Kansas City Monarchs' way to promote their team. The paper also said he was "the noisiest coach in baseball." This shows he was a lively and energetic person on the field!
Making History in the World Series
Newt Joseph made history in the 1924 Colored World Series. This was the very first championship series for the Negro leagues. In the third game, Newt hit the first-ever home run in a Colored World Series. He hit it in the fourth inning against a pitcher named Red Ryan. That game was very long and exciting, lasting thirteen innings!
Later Life
Newt Joseph passed away when he was 56 years old. He is buried at the Highland Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.
