Neyriz (pronounced Nay-reez) is a city in Iran. It is the main city of Neyriz County in Fars province. The name Neyriz is also used for the area around the city and for Bakhtegan Lake. The city used to be right on the lake's edge, but because the lake has shrunk, the city is now a bit further away to the southeast.
In the 1800s, some people in Neyriz followed a new religion called Bábism. They faced difficulties from the government at that time. More recently, a large steel factory called Neyriz Ghadir Steel Complex started being built in 2010. This factory began making steel in 2018.

A Look Back in Time: Neyriz's History
Neyriz is a very old city! It is mentioned in ancient records from the Achaemenid Empire, which was a huge Persian empire. Back then, it was called Narezzash. People in Neyriz were known for making armor, which makes sense because there was iron mining in the area. Some stories even say that the Persian King Cambyses II was buried here. However, archaeologists have not yet found direct proof of the Achaemenid city.
Neyriz in the Middle Ages
Around the year 951, a writer named al-Muqaddasi described the big mosque in Neyriz. It was on the same street as the city's market. During this time, Neyriz had a strong castle to protect it. It was part of a larger district called Darabjird.
Important people from Neyriz include Abu'l-Abbās Fazl b. Ḥātem Neyrizi, who was an astronomer and mathematician in the 900s. Later, in the 1200s, Mirza Ahmad Neyrizi became a famous calligrapher, someone who writes beautifully.
Events of the 1800s
In 1850, a religious leader named Sayyed Yahya Darabi came to Neyriz. He announced that The Báb was a chosen leader. Darabi, also known as Wahid, had been a Muslim cleric before becoming a follower of Bábism.
The governor of Neyriz, Haji Zayn al-Abedin Khan, worried that Darabi would lead an uprising. He gathered a local army of 1,000 men to stop Darabi and his followers. A conflict began, with the governor's forces in the market area and the Bábis near the mosque. The Bábis won some early fights, and the governor had to retreat.
The governor then asked for more soldiers from Shiraz. Even with these extra troops, the governor's forces were defeated in a long battle. After this, the governor offered Darabi and his followers a safe way to leave. But when they came out, they were captured and killed.
Two years later, in 1852, Ali Sardar became the new leader of the Bábis in Neyriz. Fearing more trouble, some Bábis attacked the governor. When a new governor arrived, the Bábis did not trust him and fled into the mountains for safety. The new governor gathered a large army of up to 12,000 soldiers and surrounded the Bábis. Ali Sardar was killed in a fight in late 1853.
Eventually, the cold weather and lack of food forced the Bábis to give up. Many people, including women and children, were taken prisoner and sent to Shiraz.
