Ngalba Bulal is a beautiful national park located in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. In 2015, the area once known as Cedar Bay National Park became a special part of Ngalba Bulal National Park. This section is now called Mangkalba (Cedar Bay).

About Ngalba Bulal National Park

This park is about 1,522 kilometers (946 miles) northwest of Brisbane. It is also about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Cooktown. You can only reach this park by boat or by walking.

Ngalba Bulal National Park is part of the amazing Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. This means it is a very important natural place recognized by the world. The local Aboriginal people, the Eastern Kuku Yalanji, call this area Mangkal-Mangkalba.

A Look at the Park's Past

The Cedar Bay area has an interesting history. In the 1870s, people came here to mine for tin. You can still see some of the old tin mining remains near a place called Black Snake Rocks.

Land Handover to Traditional Owners

In 2007, a large area of land, including Cedar Bay National Park, was given back to the Cape York Aboriginal people. This happened because of a Native Title claim from 1994. Native Title recognizes the traditional rights and interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to land and waters. This handover was a big step in recognizing the deep connection Aboriginal people have to their land.

Before it became part of Ngalba Bulal, Cedar Bay National Park was known as Mount Finnigan National Park. It was made larger over time.

Things to Do and See

Ngalba Bulal National Park is home to some of Australia's northernmost tropical rainforests. These forests are full of life and unique plants.

Wildlife Watching

If you love birds, this park is a great place for birdwatching. You might spot amazing birds like cassowaries, which are large, colorful birds. Other common birds include yellow-breasted sunbirds, double-eyed fig-parrots, mangrove kingfishers, beach stone-curlews, and pied imperial-pigeons.

Exploring the Park

You can go bush camping in the park, which means camping in undeveloped areas. However, fishing and collecting plants or other items are not allowed. The park has one main walking track. This track used to be a path for donkeys that carried tin from the mines. It is a challenging walk, so only fit walkers should try it.
