Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân (born 12 April 1954) is an important Vietnamese leader. She is known for being the first woman in Vietnamese history to lead the country's main law-making body. This body is called the National Assembly of Vietnam. She served as its Chair from 2016 to 2021.
Before this, she was a member of the Politburo. This is the highest group that makes decisions for the country. She also worked in different government ministries from 2006 to 2011. Before joining national politics, she was the leader of Hải Dương province from 2002 to 2006. She was the first woman to hold this important provincial role.

Early Life and Family
Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân was born on April 12, 1954. Her birthplace was Châu Hòa, a small area in Giồng Trôm District, which is in Bến Tre Province. Her mother, Nguyễn Thị Sang, was known for her role in the Bến Tre revolution. During the Vietnam War, her family was involved with the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam. She grew up with her mother and went to school in the areas controlled by the Republic of Vietnam. Her husband's name is Lê Trung Dũng.
Education and Learning
In 1973, Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân went to Saigon (now called Ho Chi Minh City) to study literature. However, her studies were stopped when the National Liberation Front took control of the South in 1975.
Later, she continued her education at the University of Finance. There, she earned a degree in financial management. She also earned a master's degree in economics from the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City. This degree focused on how to manage money and credit. She also studied advanced political theory.
In 2018, she received a special award called an honorary doctorate. This was in political science from the Pukyong National University in South Korea.
Career and Public Service
After Vietnam became one united country, Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân started her career in finance. She worked at the Ben Tre Finance Bureau. She joined the Communist Party of Vietnam on December 9, 1981. She became a full member of the Party one year later.
She moved up through different roles in the finance department. In October 1991, she became the Director of the Ben Tre Finance Department. In April 1995, she moved to the central government. She was appointed Deputy Minister of Finance and served in this role until 2002.
In September 2002, she became the Party Secretary of Hải Dương province. This role is like being the main leader or Governor of the province. She held this position until February 2006. She was the first woman to be a Party Secretary of a province. At that time, she was the only female provincial leader in Vietnam.

In February 2006, she worked briefly at the Ministry of Finance again. Then, from March 2006 to August 2007, she was the Permanent Deputy Minister of Trade. After that, Nguyễn Tấn Dũng appointed her to lead the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs. In this role, she became well-known across the country. She played a very important part in helping 10,000 Vietnamese workers return home during the Libyan crisis in 2011.

In May 2011, she was chosen to be the Deputy Chair of the National Assembly. In 2013, she became a member of the Politburo. This is the country's most important decision-making group. In 2016, she was elected Chair of the National Assembly. This made her the first woman in Vietnamese history to lead the country's law-making body. She was one of the top four leaders in Vietnam.
In a survey in late 2020, many Vietnamese people admired her. She was voted among the five most admired female figures. She retired from her roles in March 2021.
