The Niagara Falls Country Club is a special place for sports and fun. It's a private club with a fantastic golf course. You can find it in the Lewiston Heights area of Lewiston, New York. This spot is just outside Niagara Falls, New York, and it offers amazing views!
A Look Back: The Club's Story
The Niagara Falls Country Club first opened its doors in 1901. It started in Niagara Falls, where the Hyde Park Golf Club is today. A local businessman named Frank A. Dudley helped create the club. He was even president four times!
In 1916, the club moved to its current home in Lewiston. This new location is on top of the Niagara Escarpment. The golf course officially opened for players on June 1, 1919. Alfred "Alf" Campbell was the first head golf professional.
The club has incredible views of nearby towns like Lewiston and Porter. You can even see across the border into Canada! From here, you can spot places like Niagara-on-the-Lake and Toronto.
Since 1959, the Niagara Falls Country Club has hosted a famous golf tournament. It's called the Porter Cup. Many future PGA Tour stars have played here. Golf legends like Phil Mickelson, David Duval, Scott Verplank, and Ben Crenhaw have all won the Porter Cup.
The Amazing Golf Course
The golf course at the Niagara Falls Country Club is a championship course. It has 18 holes and is a par 70 course. This means a good golfer should finish it in 70 strokes. The course stretches for 6,621 yards. It also has 90 tricky sand traps!
Famous golf course designers helped create and update this course. A.W. Tillinghast designed it in 1919. Later, Robert Trent Jones Sr., Geoffrey Cornish, and Brian M. Silva made improvements.
Golfers can also use two large practice putting greens. There's also a driving range to practice long shots. A chipping green helps players work on shorter shots. The course is 6,871 yards long in total.
In 2011, this golf course was ranked as one of the best private courses. It was #6 in Western New York. People have described the greens as having "subtle and obvious undulations." This means the putting surfaces have interesting slopes and bumps.
Beyond Golf: Tennis and Swimming Fun
The Niagara Falls Country Club offers more than just golf. It has great tennis courts too! There are four lighted Har-Tru tennis courts. Har-Tru is a special surface that's easy on players' bodies. The club also has a patio and a tennis hut. Many people say these are the best Har-Tru courts in Western New York.
Right next to the Clubhouse, you'll find an Olympic-sized pool. It's a great place to cool off and have fun. The pool also has a wonderful view of the Niagara Escarpment.
