Andrea Nicole Livingstone (born July 10, 1985), known as Nic Stone, is an American author. She writes exciting stories for young adults and middle schoolers. She is most famous for her first novel, Dear Martin, and her middle grade book, Clean Getaway. Her books have been translated into many different languages around the world.

About Nic Stone
Nic Stone grew up in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. She studied Psychology at Spelman College. After college, she worked helping teenagers as a mentor. She also lived in Israel for a few years.
Becoming a Writer
Nic Stone discovered her love for writing during a trip to Israel in 2008. She met a family with a fascinating story that made her want to write. In 2017, she wrote her first book for young adults. She was inspired by the Divergent books by Veronica Roth. Nic Stone liked that the Divergent series had Black characters who survived until the end. This first book helped her find a literary agent.
The Story of Dear Martin
Nic Stone's first novel, Dear Martin, was published in 2017. It tells the story of a high school student named Justyce. He starts writing letters to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. after a difficult experience with police officers. Stone began writing Dear Martin after a young Black student faced unfair treatment. She wanted to explore themes of racial injustice and identity.
The book quickly became very popular. It appeared on The New York Times bestseller list at number 4. It was also chosen as a finalist for the William C. Morris Award in 2017. Dear Martin has been published in many countries, including Germany, Brazil, and the UK. In 2020, it hit the New York Times bestseller list again, reaching number 1 for Young Adult Paperbacks.
A sequel to Dear Martin was published in October 2020. It is called Dear Justyce. This book is about a teenager who is facing serious challenges. Nic Stone said she wrote it to show a different side of a young Black boy. Another book in the series, Dear Manny, is planned for March 2025.
Clean Getaway: A Middle Grade Adventure
Nic Stone's first book for middle schoolers is called Clean Getaway. It was published in January 2020 and has fun illustrations by Dawud Anyabwile. The story is about 11-year-old Scoob, who goes on an unexpected road trip with his grandmother.
This book also became a bestseller. It reached number 5 on the Children's Middle Grade Hardcover New York Times bestseller list. Nic Stone got the idea for the story from a news headline. It was about a grandma who was much more adventurous than she seemed!
More Awesome Books
Nic Stone has written many other books for young adults. Her second young adult novel, Odd One Out, came out in 2018. It also received great reviews. In 2019, her third novel, Jackpot, was published. This story follows a high school cashier named Rico. She sells a lottery ticket that wins a huge jackpot.
In 2019, it was announced that Nic Stone would write a novel about Shuri. Shuri is a character from Marvel's Black Panther comics. The first book, Shuri, was published in 2020. Two more books in the Shuri series followed: Shuri: The Vanished in 2021 and Shuri: Symbiosis in 2022.
Stone also co-authored a young adult novel called Blackout. It was released in June 2021. She wrote it with five other amazing authors: Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon. A companion novel, Whiteout, was published in 2023.
Besides novels, Nic Stone writes essays and short stories. Her short fiction has appeared in many different collections. She also co-authored a young adult version of the book How to Be an Antiracist. This new book, titled How to Be a (Young) Antiracist, was published in 2023.
In February 2022, Nic Stone hosted a podcast series with Marvel and Sirius XM. The podcast was called The History of Marvel Comics: Black Panther. She was also a main speaker at the AASL National Conference in 2023.
