Nicholas Michael Hynes, born on June 18, 1996, is a talented Australian rugby league player. He plays as a halfback for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in Australia's top league, the National Rugby League (NRL). He also represents Australia in international games. Before joining the Sharks, he played as a fullback for the Melbourne Storm.

Nicho Hynes' Early Life

Nicho was born in Gosford, New South Wales, Australia. He has Indigenous Australian heritage from the Wiradjuri people, and also Scottish roots.

He grew up on the Central Coast of New South Wales. Nicho went to Brisbane Water Secondary College for his education.

He started playing junior rugby league for the Umina Beach Bunnies and Woy Woy Roosters. Later, he signed with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

Nicho Hynes' Rugby League Career

Starting His Journey in Rugby League

Nicho Hynes joined the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Under-20s team in 2015. After that, he spent two seasons, 2017 and 2018, playing for the Mackay Cutters. During this time, he played 42 matches in the Queensland Cup. He also worked as a teacher aide at a primary school in Mackay.

Playing for the Melbourne Storm (2019-2021)

In 2019, Nicho signed with the Melbourne Storm. He continued to play in the Queensland Cup for their feeder club, the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

On August 11, 2019, Nicho made his first NRL appearance for the Melbourne Storm. This game was against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in his hometown, Gosford. His older brother, Wade Hynes, presented him with his Melbourne Storm jersey.

In 2020, the Queensland Cup season was cancelled. Nicho played 11 NRL matches for the Storm, often coming off the bench. He signed a new contract for another year in September 2020.

Nicho was part of the Storm team that won the 2020 NRL Grand Final 26–20 against the Penrith Panthers. He was named on the bench but did not get to play any minutes in the grand final.

In 2021, Nicho had a strong start to the season with the Melbourne Storm. He was even named in the extended squad for the NSW Blues for Game 3 of the 2021 State of Origin series.

On June 1, 2021, it was announced that Nicho would leave the Melbourne Storm at the end of the 2021 NRL season. He decided to join the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. He aimed to play in a key playmaking role and help rebuild the Sharks team.

Playing for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks (2022-Present)

Becoming a Top Player and Dally M Medal Winner (2022)

In the first round of the 2022 NRL season, Nicho made his debut for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. They lost 24-19 to the Canberra Raiders.

In Round 2, Nicho kicked a winning conversion after the final siren. This helped Cronulla defeat the Parramatta Eels 18-16. On May 29, he was selected as the 18th man for New South Wales in Game 1 of the 2022 State of Origin series, but he did not play.

In Round 20, Nicho kicked a field goal in extra time to win the match 21-20 against the South Sydney Rabbitohs. In Round 23, he was outstanding for Cronulla, scoring two tries in a big 40-6 win over the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.

Nicho had an amazing first season with the Sharks. On September 28, he won the prestigious Dally M Medal and the Provan-Summons Medal. These awards recognize him as the best player in the NRL for that season.

Representative Football Debut for NSW and Australia (2023)

In Round 4 of the 2023 NRL season, Nicho returned to play for Cronulla. He had been injured in the first few rounds. Cronulla won that game 40-8 against their rivals, St. George Illawarra.

On April 6, 2023, Nicho signed a new five-year contract. This means he will stay with Cronulla until the end of the 2029 season. In Round 9 of the 2023 NRL season, Nicho scored a try and kicked eight goals. Cronulla defeated North Queensland 44-6. He also received the first-ever Paul Green medal after this game.

On May 22, Nicho was chosen to play for New South Wales in Game 1 of the 2023 State of Origin series. However, on June 12, 2023, it was announced that he was not selected for Game 2 of the series.

Nicho played 21 games for Cronulla in the 2023 NRL season. The team finished sixth on the ladder. He played in their close 13-12 loss against the Sydney Roosters, which ended their season.

On May 26, 2024, Nicho was named as the halfback for New South Wales for the 2024 State of Origin series. After New South Wales lost Game 1 by 38-10, the coach, Michael Maguire, told Nicho he would not be needed for Game 2.

On July 11, 2024, it was announced that Nicho would miss eight weeks due to a leg injury. He got this injury during a training session before Cronulla's Round 19 game.

Nicho played 18 games for Cronulla in the 2024 NRL season. The club finished 4th and made it to the finals. He played in all three of Cronulla's finals matches, including their preliminary final loss against Penrith.
