Nicholas Michael Hynes (born on June 18, 1996) is an Australian professional rugby league player. He plays as a halfback for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the National Rugby League (NRL). Before joining the Sharks, he played as a fullback for the Melbourne Storm.
Nicho Hynes is known for his excellent kicking skills and ability to lead his team. He has won major awards, including the Dally M Medal, which is given to the best player in the NRL. He has also represented his state, New South Wales, and his country, Australia, in rugby league.
About Nicho Hynes
Early Life and Junior Rugby
Nicho Hynes was born in Gosford, New South Wales, Australia. His family has Indigenous Australian Wiradjuri roots, and he also has Scottish heritage.
He grew up on the Central Coast of New South Wales. Nicho went to Brisbane Water Secondary College.
As a young player, he played junior rugby league for the Umina Beach Bunnies and the Woy Woy Roosters. Later, he signed with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles to continue his rugby journey.
Starting His Professional Career
Nicho Hynes joined the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Under-20s team in 2015. After that, he spent two seasons (2017–2018) playing for the Mackay Cutters. He played 42 games for them in the Queensland Cup, which is a league below the NRL. During this time, he also worked as a teacher's aide at a primary school in Mackay.
Playing in the NRL
Time with Melbourne Storm (2019-2021)

In 2019, Nicho Hynes signed with the Melbourne Storm. He played for their feeder club, the Sunshine Coast Falcons, in the Queensland Cup.
On August 11, 2019, Nicho made his first appearance in the NRL for the Melbourne Storm. This special game was against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in his hometown, Central Coast Stadium. His older brother, Wade Hynes, presented him with his Melbourne Storm jersey.
In 2020, because the Queensland Cup was cancelled, Nicho played 11 NRL games for the Storm. He often came off the bench, playing in different positions when needed. He signed a new contract to stay with the Storm for another year.
Nicho was part of the Storm team that won the 2020 NRL Grand Final against the Penrith Panthers. The Storm won 26–20. Nicho was named as a substitute player but did not get to play any minutes in the game. Even so, he was part of the winning team!
Becoming a Starter and Leaving Melbourne (2021)
Nicho Hynes started the 2021 season strongly for the Melbourne Storm. On June 1, 2021, it was announced that he would leave the Storm at the end of the 2021 NRL season. He decided to join the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. He wanted to play in the main playmaking positions and help rebuild the Sharks team.
Because of his great performances, Nicho was chosen for the extended NSW Blues squad for Game 3 of the 2021 State of Origin series.
Joining Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks (2022-Present)
Becoming a Superstar and Dally M Winner (2022)
In the first game of the 2022 NRL season, Nicho Hynes made his debut for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. They lost 24-19 to the Canberra Raiders.
In Round 2, Nicho showed his clutch skills. He kicked the winning conversion after the final siren to help Cronulla beat the Parramatta Eels 18-16.
On May 29, he was chosen as the 18th man for New South Wales in Game 1 of the 2022 State of Origin series, but he didn't play.
Later in the season, in Round 20, Nicho kicked a field goal in extra time to win the game 21-20 against the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
In Round 23, Nicho was amazing for Cronulla, scoring two tries in a big 40-6 win over the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles.
Nicho had an incredible first season with the Sharks. On September 28, he won the prestigious Dally M Medal for the best player in the NRL. He also won the Provan-Summons Medal, which is voted on by the fans.
Continued Success and Representative Honours (2023-2024)
Nicho Hynes returned from injury in Round 4 of the 2023 NRL season. He helped Cronulla win 40-8 against their rivals, St. George Illawarra.
On April 6, 2023, Nicho signed a new five-year contract. This means he will stay with Cronulla until the end of the 2029 season.
In Round 9 of the 2023 NRL season, Nicho scored a try and kicked eight goals. This helped Cronulla defeat North Queensland 44-6. He was also given the first-ever Paul Green medal after this game.
On May 22, Nicho was selected to play for New South Wales in Game 1 of the 2023 State of Origin series. However, he was not chosen for Game 2.
In the 2023 NRL season, Nicho played 21 games for Cronulla. The team finished sixth on the ladder. Their season ended with a close 13-12 loss to the Sydney Roosters in the finals.
On May 26, 2024, Nicho was named as the halfback for New South Wales in the 2024 State of Origin series. After a tough loss in Game 1, he was not selected for Game 2.
In July, Nicho unfortunately got a leg injury during training. This meant he missed about eight weeks of playing time. Despite this, he played 18 games for Cronulla in the 2024 NRL season. The team finished 4th and made it to the finals. Nicho played in all three of Cronulla's finals matches, including their preliminary final loss.
