Nicholas de Soules was an important Scottish noble who lived in the 1200s. He was known as the Lord of Liddesdale and also held the title of Butler of Scotland. These were powerful positions in the Scottish Borders region.
Nicholas was the son of William I de Soules and Ermengarde. His mother's parents were Alan Durward and Marjorie of Scotland. Nicholas also had a younger brother, John de Soules, who later became a Guardian of Scotland. When his father passed away, Nicholas took over his family's lands and titles.
In 1290, a young queen named Margaret, Maid of Norway died. This led to a big problem: who would be the next king or queen of Scotland? Nicholas de Soules was one of several people who believed they had a right to the throne. He based his claim on his grandmother, Marjorie, who was a daughter of King Alexander II of Scotland.
In 1296, Nicholas showed his loyalty to King Edward I of England. He did this by performing a special ceremony called "homage." He performed homage on July 27 in Elgin and again on August 28 in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
