He has been a world champion three times in BJJ and has won two medals at the ADCC World Championship, which is a big competition for submission grappling.

Nicholas Meregali's Early Life and Training

Nicholas de Barcellos Meregali was born on May 27, 1994. His hometown is Santo Antônio in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Nicholas started training in BJJ when he was 16 years old. He trained at the ACJJ academy in Santo Antônio da Patrulha.

Rising Through the Ranks

Nicholas was known as one of the best young athletes in BJJ. He won every IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship when he was a purple belt. Then, as a brown belt, he won two "double gold" world titles. This means he won both his weight class and the open weight class. These wins made him a five-time world champion before he even reached black belt. His coach, Mário Reis, promoted him to black belt after his world title win in 2016.

Nicholas Meregali's Black Belt Journey

In his first year as a black belt, Nicholas Meregali won the 2017 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship. He beat a very strong opponent, Leandro Lo, in the final match. The next year, Nicholas won a gold medal at the Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu Championship. He won by using a submission move from his opponent's back.

Winning More Titles

In 2019, Nicholas won the Brazilian national title again. He also won the open weight class, earning "double gold" once more. In the same year, he became a world champion again in his weight division.

2021 Season

Before the 2021 World Championship, Nicholas joined a new team called the Dream Art Project. During a match, he was disqualified from the competition. This happened because he made a rude gesture to someone watching. Before this, many people thought he would win gold medals in both his weight class and the open weight division.

2022 Season

At the 2022 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, Nicholas won his third world title in the Absolute division. He also earned a silver medal in his own weight class. Nicholas has said in interviews that he is a perfectionist. People describe his fighting style as "complete." He is especially known for his amazing guard techniques. He also uses a special way of doing the De La Riva position and is good at chokes from the back.

Trying New Challenges

In 2022, Nicholas started competing in "no gi" competitions. This means he competed without the traditional BJJ uniform. He won his first no gi match by using an armbar. To get ready for the ADCC World Championships, he trained at the New Wave Jiu Jitsu academy in Austin, Texas. His coach there was John Danaher.

ADCC World Championship 2022

Nicholas won a bronze medal in his weight division at the 2022 ADCC World Championship. He then won a silver medal in the openweight division. He beat Tye Ruotolo in the semi-final but lost in the final to Yuri Simões.

2023 Season

Nicholas was supposed to have a rematch with Craig Jones in February 2023, but it was postponed. He then returned to gi competition at the IBJJF Pan Championship 2023. He won gold medals in both his ultra-heavyweight division and the absolute division.

Nicholas competed in a special gi match in May 2023. During this time, he announced that he would no longer compete in IBJJF events. He won the match by submitting his opponent with a mounted triangle choke. He also won matches by armbar and arm-triangle choke later that year. In September 2023, Nicholas won the IBJJF Absolute Grand Prix, taking home a $40,000 prize. He also won another match in December 2023 by rear-naked choke. Nicholas was named 'Male Grappler of the Year (Gi)' at the JitsMagazine BJJ Awards 2023.

2024 Season

Nicholas continued to compete in 2024. He won a superfight in March by submission. In May, he won another main event match by submission. Nicholas was invited to compete at the 2024 ADCC World Championship. He won his first match but then dislocated his shoulder in the quarter-final. This was the first time he had been submitted as a black belt. He later shared that he needed surgery for his shoulder and would be out of competition for at least five months.
