Occupation Medical researcher

Sir Nicholas John Wald (born 31 May 1944) is a British medical researcher. He is a professor of preventive medicine at University College London. He also holds honorary positions at St George's, University of London, the University of Oxford, and Brown University in the USA.

Sir Nicholas is known for his important work in preventing diseases and health problems. He helped create tests to find health issues early and discovered ways to prevent serious birth defects.

Discovering Ways to Detect Birth Defects

In the 1970s, Sir Nicholas Wald made a big discovery. He found a way to detect neural tube defects in unborn babies. These are problems with the baby's brain or spine that happen very early in development.

The Alpha-Fetoprotein Test

He showed that doctors could measure a substance called alpha-fetoprotein in a pregnant woman's blood. If the levels were unusual, it could mean the baby had a neural tube defect. This helped doctors find these problems sooner.

Improving Screening Tests

Sir Nicholas also created the "MoM" (multiple of the median) system. This is a way to measure how much of a certain marker is in the blood compared to what's normal. He and his team developed several important screening tests for pregnant women:

  • The Triple test (1988)
  • The Combined test (1998)
  • The Quad test (2003)
  • The Integrated test (1999)
  • The Reflex DNA test (2015)

These tests help doctors check for certain conditions during pregnancy.

Understanding the Dangers of Passive Smoking

Sir Nicholas Wald also did important research on the dangers of passive smoking. Passive smoking means breathing in smoke from other people's cigarettes.

Passive Smoking and Lung Cancer

In 1986, he showed that breathing in other people's tobacco smoke can cause lung cancer. He was part of a US National Academy of Sciences committee that first officially stated this.

Passive Smoking and Heart Disease

Later, in 2003, with Professor Malcolm Law, he showed that passive smoking also causes cardiovascular disease. This means it can harm your heart and blood vessels.

Preventing Birth Defects and Inventing the Polypill

Sir Nicholas Wald's work has led to major breakthroughs in preventing health problems.

Folic Acid and Neural Tube Defects

In 1991, he showed that taking folic acid supplements could prevent most cases of neural tube defects. Folic acid is a type of vitamin B. This discovery has helped many babies be born healthy.

The Polypill Idea

In 1999, working with Professor Malcolm Law, Sir Nicholas invented the idea of the polypill. A polypill is a single pill that combines several different medicines. The idea is to make it easier for people to take medicines that can prevent heart disease and strokes.

Awards and Recognition

Sir Nicholas Wald has received many honors for his important contributions to medicine:

  • In 2000, he received the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation Award.
  • He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2004. This is a very high honor for scientists in the UK.
  • He was made a knight in 2008. This means he can use the title "Sir" before his name. He received this for his services to preventive medicine.
  • In 2019, he became a member of the US National Academy of Medicine.
