Nichols is a town in Tioga County, New York. It's located right on the southern border of both the county and the state. The town is about halfway between the cities of Binghamton and Elmira.

In 2020, about 2,357 people lived in Nichols. The town is named after an early landowner, Colonel Nichols. There is also a village inside the town that shares the name, Nichols.

A Look at Nichols' Past

Early History and Settlers

In 1779, the Sullivan Expedition traveled through this area. This expedition was part of the Revolutionary War. Its goal was to destroy settlements of Native Americans who had sided with the British.

The first people to settle here permanently arrived before 1787. However, they were not the official settlers. The first official settler came around 1791.

How Nichols Became a Town

The town of Nichols was officially created in 1824. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Tioga.

The town of Nichols covers a total area of about 34.7 square miles (89.8 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, about 33.7 square miles (87.3 square kilometers). The rest, about 1.0 square mile (2.5 square kilometers), is water.

Rivers and Borders

The Susquehanna River forms the northern border of the town. The southern border of Nichols is the state line with Pennsylvania.

Important Roads

The Southern Tier Expressway runs through the town. This road is also known as New York State Route 17 and will become Interstate 86 in the future. It passes south of the Susquehanna River. Another important road, New York State Route 282, connects NY-17 to the Pennsylvania state line.

  • Wapasening Creek – A stream that flows into the Susquehanna River near Nichols village.
