Nicholas Alexander Johnson (born December 22, 1992) is an American professional basketball player. He currently plays for Trefl Sopot in the Polish Basketball League (PLK). Nick is known for his time playing college basketball for the Arizona Wildcats. While there, he was named the best player in his conference, the Pac-12. He was later picked by the Houston Rockets in the 2014 NBA draft.

High School Basketball Journey

Nick Johnson started his high school basketball career at Highland High School in Gilbert, Arizona. He played there from 2007 to 2009. After that, he moved to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada for his junior year.

Playing at Findlay Prep

During his junior year (2009–10), Nick was a key player. He scored about 14 points, grabbed 4.6 rebounds, and made 3.4 assists per game. He helped Findlay Prep achieve an impressive record of 32 wins and only 2 losses. In November 2010, he officially committed to play college basketball at the University of Arizona.

In his senior year (2010–11), Nick's performance got even better. He averaged 24.8 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. He led Findlay Prep to a 28–4 record. Experts ranked him as one of the top basketball prospects in the country.

College Career at Arizona

Nick Johnson played college basketball for the Arizona Wildcats. He showed great skill and leadership throughout his time there.

Freshman Year Success

In his first year (freshman season), Nick quickly made an impact. He was named to the 2012 Pac-12 All-Freshman team. This means he was recognized as one of the best new players in the conference. He played in 35 games, averaging 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game.

Sophomore Year Growth

During his second year (sophomore season), Nick continued to improve. He was recognized for his strong defense, earning an honorable mention for the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team. In a tournament in Las Vegas, he led his team by scoring 14 points per game. He also averaged 11.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 35 games.

Junior Year Highlights

His junior year was his most successful college season. He was named to the first-team All-Pac-12 and the Pac-12 All-Defensive team. The biggest honor was being named the Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year. This award goes to the best player in the entire Pac-12 conference. Nick finished his college career with 1,333 points. After this amazing season, he decided to enter the NBA draft on April 15, 2014.

Professional Basketball Journey

After his successful college career, Nick Johnson began his professional basketball journey.

Starting with the Houston Rockets

On June 26, 2014, the Houston Rockets picked Nick as the 42nd player in the 2014 NBA draft. He officially signed with the Rockets on July 25, 2014. During his first year, he also spent time playing for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. This team is part of the NBA Development League, which helps players gain more experience.

In July 2015, Nick was part of a trade to the Denver Nuggets. However, he was later released by the Nuggets in October 2015.

Playing for the Austin Spurs

On December 28, 2015, Nick joined the Austin Spurs, another team in the NBA Development League. He played 34 games for them, averaging 10.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.

After a brief time with the Orlando Magic in 2016, Nick signed with Bayern Munich in Germany. He played for them until the end of the 2016–2017 season.

Championship with Austin Spurs

Nick returned to the Austin Spurs in November 2017. He played a big role in helping the team win the G League championship. Because of his excellent performance in the final games, he was named the G League Finals MVP. This is a huge honor for a player in that league. He later rejoined the Austin Spurs again in November 2018.

Playing Around the World

Since 2019, Nick has played for several teams in different countries. He joined the Wisconsin Herd in the G League in January 2019. Then, he moved to France to play for Nanterre 92 in March 2019.

From 2019 to 2021, Nick played for Türk Telekom in Turkey. He averaged 11.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game there. He returned to Nanterre 92 in France for the 2021–2022 season. In 2023, he played for Hapoel Holon in Israel. As of November 2024, he plays for Trefl Sopot in Poland.

Family Connections to Basketball

Basketball runs in Nick Johnson's family! His father, Joey, and his uncle, Dennis, were both professional basketball players. His uncle Dennis was a very famous player. He won three NBA championships and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
