Nick Littlemore's Early Life and Music Journey
Nick Littlemore was born in Sydney, Australia, on May 6, 1978. He grew up in Wahroonga with his two older brothers. His brother James later became a music video director. His brother Sam also became a musician and producer.
In 2011, Littlemore shared that his parents encouraged them to be creative. He said he and his brothers were always interested in art. They took pottery classes and drawing lessons during school holidays. Their cousin, Xanthe Littlemore, is also a singer-songwriter.
When Nick was 10, he met Peter Mayes, who would become his bandmate. They started making music together when they were 13 or 14. Littlemore went to Barker College and finished high school in 1996. He then studied film, sound, and performance at the College of Fine Arts. This college is part of the University of New South Wales.
Forming Pnau and Early Success
Littlemore and Mayes formed the band Pnau in the mid-1990s. They started as an acid house and trance band while still in high school. The group has released several studio albums. These include Sambanova (1999), Again (2003), Pnau (2007), and Soft Universe (2011).
Sambanova, Pnau, and Soft Universe all reached the Top 40 on the ARIA Albums Chart.

Other Music Projects and Collaborations
While still with Pnau, Littlemore also worked on other music projects. In 2001, he joined his brother Sam in a group called L'More. They released a song called "Takin' Hold."
In 2004, Littlemore started an art rock band called Teenager in Sydney. He asked Pip Brown, also known as Ladyhawke, to play guitar. Teenager released an album called Thirteen in 2006. Littlemore's brother James directed the music video for their song "Bound and Gagged."
In 2000, Littlemore met Luke Steele from the band The Sleepy Jackson. They started writing songs and performing together. The Sleepy Jackson recorded "Tell the Girls That I'm Not Hangin' Out" for their 2003 album, Lovers. Littlemore helped write this song.
Pnau and The Sleepy Jackson also performed "Modern Way" together. This song was written by Littlemore, Mayes, and Steele. On Pnau's 2007 self-titled album, Steele sang lead vocals on "Freedom" and "With You Forever." Ladyhawke sang lead vocals on "Embrace."
Empire of the Sun
While working on the Pnau album, Littlemore and Steele began writing songs for a new project. This project became the electro-pop group Empire of the Sun. Littlemore lived in Sydney and Steele lived in Perth. However, they worked together by sending ideas back and forth.
In 2007, Steele would fly to Sydney to record songs for their first album. This album was called Walking on a Dream. Mayes also helped with the recording and mixing.
In August 2008, Empire of the Sun released their first song, "Walking on a Dream." It reached number 10 on the ARIA Singles Chart. Their second song, "We Are the People," came out in September. The album was released in October and reached number 6 on the ARIA Albums Chart.
In 2009, Steele mentioned that Empire of the Sun planned to tour. He said it would be more like a play than a typical band concert. They worked with theater directors and built special inflatable sets.
Working with Elton John
To promote Pnau around the world, Littlemore and Mayes went to London. In December 2007, Elton John heard Pnau's song "Wild Strawberries" in Sydney. He loved the album and contacted Littlemore to tell him how much he liked it.
Pnau returned to Australia in January 2008 to play at Big Day Out. They met Elton John, who signed them to his management company in the United Kingdom. Pnau then moved to London permanently. Littlemore and Mayes worked with Elton John and set up a recording studio there. They also worked as record producers.
Awards and Later Work
Littlemore's bands have won many ARIA Music Awards. Pnau won 'Best Dance Release' in 2000 for Sambanova. Empire of the Sun won seven awards in 2009 for their album Walking on a Dream and its title song.
Since 2009, Littlemore has been taking medicine for arthritis. From late 2009, he worked in Montreal, Canada. He was a composer and musical director for the Cirque Du Soleil show Zarkana. This show first opened on June 29, 2011, in New York.
Pnau's fourth album, Soft Universe, was recorded in London. After its release, Mayes confirmed that Littlemore and Steele were working on a second Empire of the Sun album. Littlemore said they started writing in New York in a studio run by blind people. He found it fun to be in "weird places" with Luke Steele. As of July 2011, Littlemore lives in LA when he is not touring.
