The Nicobar district is a special area in India. It's one of three districts in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This district covers all the Nicobar Islands. These islands are in the Indian Ocean, near the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. The main office for the district is on an island called Car Nicobar.

This district is one of the least populated in India. It's the fifth smallest in terms of people living there, out of 640 districts.

The Nicobar district has a leader called a Deputy Commissioner. This person helps run the district. They report to the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Think of the Lieutenant Governor as the main leader for all the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In 2011, about 36,844 people lived in the Nicobar district. This number is similar to the country of Liechtenstein. Out of all 640 districts in India, Nicobar ranks 636th in population.

The district has a population density of about 20 people per square kilometer. This means not many people live close together. Between 2001 and 2011, the number of people living here actually went down by about 12.48%.

The sex ratio in Nicobar is 778 females for every 1000 males. This means there are fewer girls and women than boys and men. About 77.5% of the people in the district can read and write. This is called the literacy rate.

Indigenous Communities

The Nicobar district is a special area for indigenous peoples. It is called an Integrated Tribal District. Most of the people living here are from native groups. The main groups are the Nicobarese and the Shompen. These groups are recognized as Scheduled Tribes by the Constitution of India.

Because it's a tribal area, there are rules for visiting. Only Indian citizens can travel to the district. They also need a special permit to enter.

The 2004 Tsunami

The district was greatly affected by a huge tsunami in 2004. This giant wave was caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. The tsunami caused many deaths and damaged homes and buildings.
