2009–2012

He was the fashion director for Lady Gaga's performance at the 2009 MuchMusic Video Awards. He also styled her for many important events in 2009. This included the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. There, she wore dresses by Jean-Paul Gaultier and Alexander McQueen. He also styled her for Saturday Night Live. For the Royal Variety Performance, she wore a latex dress. It looked like dresses worn by Elizabeth I of England. This was for Gaga to meet Elizabeth II.

Their first music video together was for "Bad Romance". It won the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. In the video, Gaga wore outfits by Alexander McQueen and Franc Fernandez. Formichetti also styled her album The Fame Monster. He was the fashion director for her sold-out The Monster Ball Tour.

2010

In early 2010, Formichetti was the stylist for Lady Gaga's music video "Telephone". He also styled her for the 52nd Grammy Awards. There, Gaga performed with Elton John. He also styled her video for "Alejandro". For this, Gaga was shot by Terry Richardson for Rolling Stone.

There, she wore the well-known "meat dress" by Franc Fernandez. At the end of 2010, Vogue named her Best-Dressed of the Year.

2011

At the 53rd Grammy Awards, they worked with designer Hussein Chalayan. Gaga wanted to show the idea of rebirth. She sent Formichetti a picture of a human embryo. He created "egg-shaped shoes." This led to the "vessel" (egg) designed by Chalayan. Gaga was carried in it onto the stage. She then hatched out in a latex outfit to perform "Born This Way." She was wearing "Mugler by Nicola Formichetti."

He also styled Gaga for the MAC Viva Glam Campaign. This campaign helps people with AIDS.

Mugler

In September 2010, Nicola Formichetti became the new creative director for the fashion house founded by Thierry Mugler. He renamed it Mugler. Lady Gaga actually encouraged him to take the job. They were looking at old Mugler clothes while filming the "Telephone" video.

At Mugler, Formichetti oversaw designers for women's and men's clothing. He left Mugler on April 2, 2013. He also asked K-pop artist G-Dragon to make music for the fashion show. It was called "I am Mugler."

Menswear

Formichetti's first menswear collection was called "Anatomy of Change." It was shown during Paris fashion week on January 19, 2011. A video was made with his new muse, Rick Genest. Lady Gaga also made a remix of her song "Scheiße" for the show.

The clothes had colors like navy blue and bright orange. They also featured modern jackets without lapels. Some pieces were made of latex, like biker jackets and gloves. Formichetti wanted the collection to connect the past, present, and future of fashion. The show was streamed live online from Paris.

Womenswear

The womenswear collection was shown on March 2. Lady Gaga was again the musical director. She performed on the runway for Formichetti's show. She modeled pieces from his collection, called "Anatomy of Change Femme—Mode Sans Frontiers." Rick Genest also appeared on the runway.

Critics liked the clothes. They had a "minimally rendered" look with sculpted shoulders. Formichetti used black, white, electric blue, and beige colors. The show's set looked like the inside of a Gothic cathedral. The models and Lady Gaga walked through it. The show was streamed live on the brand's Facebook page. Formichetti believes the future of fashion is digital. He said, "I design digitally, I communicate digitally, and I live digitally."

Nicopanda

Nicola and his brother Andrea Formichetti created the Nicopanda line. It is based on a panda cartoon that looks like Nicola. Nicola said his friends called him "Nico Panda" because he is half Asian and used to have a beard and be a bit chubby.

Nicola's New York

The Nicopanda line first appeared in September 2011. This was at Nicola's pop-up shop in New York's Tribeca area. The shop was a mirrored space. It had vintage Versace and Mugler clothes. It also sold Nicopanda items like zombiepanda rings and iPhone skins.

Nicola held a competition for his fans on Twitter. Winners were invited to the pop-up shop for breakfast with him. They also got a preview of his new Uniqlo line.

His Ideas and Impact

Nicola Formichetti often says he is not "elitist" in fashion. He wants to share his work with everyone. He uses the Internet to do this. Like Lady Gaga, he talks with his followers and gets ideas from them. He also often works with other people. He sees himself as an art director. His job is to create moods and oversee the overall look.

His influence is wide. Before his Mugler collections, he was ranked the most influential stylist in the world. This was partly because of his many fashion magazine jobs. He made Vogue Hommes Japan a very powerful fashion magazine. He also advises many fashion houses and brands.

However, Formichetti's biggest influence comes from his work with Lady Gaga. He is her fashion director. Before him, stylists had a smaller role. He is the first stylist to take charge of a major fashion house. This shows how stylists can become very powerful in the fashion world. Formichetti chose many different designers for Lady Gaga. This has led to a "cultural phenomenon" where many people try to copy her style.

He often meets young talents who are interested in fashion. He is very hopeful for them. Formichetti also practices Transcendental Meditation every day.
