Formichetti has worked with many top brands and magazines. He was the artistic director for the French fashion house Mugler from 2010 to 2013. He has also been the fashion director for the clothing company Uniqlo and for Vogue Hommes Japan. In 2010, he won the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator at the British Fashion Awards.

Early Life and Career

Nicola Formichetti's mother was a Japanese flight attendant and his father was an Italian pilot. He grew up in both Rome, Italy, and Tokyo, Japan. As a child, he learned to play the classical piano.

When he was older, he moved to London to study architecture. However, he soon became more interested in the city's exciting street fashion and nightlife. He started working at a trendy clothing store called 'The Pineal Eye', where he became the art director.

His work caught the eye of fashion editor Katy England. She gave him a special page in the magazine Dazed & Confused. By 2008, he had become the magazine's creative director. This led to jobs with other famous magazines and fashion brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, Prada, Nike, and H&M.

Famous Collaborations

Working with Lady Gaga

Formichetti is a key member of Lady Gaga's creative team, known as the Haus of Gaga. Their work together began in 2009 for a V Magazine photoshoot. He quickly became her main fashion director, creating some of her most memorable looks.

Some of their famous projects include:

  • Music Videos: Formichetti styled the award-winning music videos for songs like "Bad Romance" and "Telephone". These videos featured wild and futuristic outfits.
  • Award Shows: He was behind Lady Gaga's look at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. He also created the famous "meat dress" she wore to the 2010 awards.
  • The Egg Vessel: For the 2011 Grammy Awards, Formichetti helped design a giant egg-shaped vessel. Lady Gaga was carried onto the red carpet inside it before hatching on stage to perform.
  • Recent Work: Their partnership continued, and in 2020, he was the fashion director for her album Chromatica. In 2021, they worked with photographer Nick Knight on a project for the brand Dom Pérignon.

Mugler Fashion House

In 2010, Formichetti became the creative director of the Paris fashion house Mugler. He wanted to bring new energy to the brand. Lady Gaga even helped persuade him to take the job.

For his first men's collection in 2011, he worked with the heavily tattooed model Rick Genest. Lady Gaga created a special music mix for the show. The collection featured modern-style jackets and unique materials.

His first women's collection was also a big event. Lady Gaga walked in the fashion show herself, modeling the new designs. The show was streamed live online for millions of fans to watch. Formichetti left Mugler in April 2013.

Other Projects

Nicopanda

Formichetti started a fun fashion line called Nicopanda with his brother, Andrea. The brand is based on a cartoon panda character that looks like Nicola. He said his friends called him "Nico Panda" because he is half-Asian and looked like a friendly bear.

The Nicopanda line was first sold in a pop-up shop in New York City in 2011. It included clothing, phone cases, and other fun items. The brand later had pop-up stores in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.

Uniqlo and MAC

Formichetti has been the fashion director for the popular Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo. He has also worked with the makeup company MAC Cosmetics, styling models for their ad campaigns.

His View on Fashion

Formichetti believes that fashion should be for everyone, not just for an elite group. He uses the internet and social media to share his work with people all over the world. He is inspired by his fans and loves to work with other creative people.

He once said that he and Lady Gaga wanted to "explode" fashion, ruin it, and then build it again in a new way. They wanted fashion to be something beautiful that everyone could enjoy. His work has had a huge influence on pop culture and the fashion industry.
