About Nicole Holofcener
Nicole Holofcener was born in New York City. She is the younger of two daughters. Her father, Lawrence Holofcener, was an artist. Her mother, Carol Joffe, worked as a set decorator.
When Nicole was eight, her mother married film producer Charles H. Joffe. He moved the family to Hollywood. Charles Joffe produced many films for director Woody Allen. This meant Nicole spent time on movie sets. She even appeared as an extra in some of Allen's films, like Take the Money and Run. Later, she worked as an apprentice editor for the film Hannah and Her Sisters (1986). An apprentice editor learns how to put film scenes together.
Nicole first wanted to be an artist, like her father. But she later decided to study film. She went to New York University and Columbia University. While at Columbia, she was taught by famous director Martin Scorsese. She made two short films called Angry and It's Richard I Love. Her short film Angry received good reviews at the Sundance Film Festival.
Holofcener is often seen as an "indie filmmaker." This means she makes independent films, which are often made outside of big Hollywood studios. Her films often show real, everyday people and their lives. She usually focuses on female characters in her movies.
Her Feature Films
Nicole Holofcener made her first full-length movie, Walking and Talking, in 1996. She wrote and directed it. The film was praised by critics. Because she understood modern women so well, she was a good choice to direct TV shows about women. These included Sex and the City and Gilmore Girls.
In 2001, she released her second film, Lovely and Amazing. This movie also received good reviews and did well at the box office.
After directing episodes of the TV series Six Feet Under, Holofcener made her third film, Friends with Money, in 2006. This movie opened the Sundance Film Festival. Its screenplay was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.
Her fourth film, Please Give, came out in 2010. It premiered at Sundance and was shown at other film festivals. Holofcener won the Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award for this film. She was also nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award for its original screenplay.
In 2013, Holofcener directed Enough Said. This romantic comedy starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini. It premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. The film became Holofcener's most successful movie financially.
In 2018, Holofcener co-wrote the screenplay for Can You Ever Forgive Me?. This film earned her nominations for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and a BAFTA Award. She also won a Writers Guild of America Award for the screenplay.
