Nicolás Castillo's Club Career
Starting at Universidad Católica
Nicolás Castillo grew up in Renca, a suburb of Santiago, the capital city of Chile. As a child, he was a big fan of Universidad Católica and later joined the club's youth team when he was 12 years old.
In 2010, Castillo scored his first goal in a cup game against the San Pedro de Atacama team. His goal helped Universidad Católica win the match with a big score of 10–0.
He made his professional debut in a league match in 2011, coming into the game in the 84th minute during a 2–0 win. On March 2, 2012, he scored his first goal in a league match, helping his team win 2–0 against Rangers.
After playing well in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, there were rumors that Castillo might join Premier League team Manchester United. However, this move never happened.
Playing for Club Brugge
In January 2014, Castillo moved to Europe and joined Belgian Pro League team Club Brugge. He signed a contract until 2018 for about €3 million. He scored a goal in his very first game for Club Brugge, helping them win 3–1 against Genk on February 9, 2014.
On November 9, 2014, Castillo scored three goals in a single game (a "hat-trick") as Club Brugge won 5–0 against Westerlo. Later, in January 2015, he was loaned to 1. FSV Mainz 05 in Germany. Unfortunately, he injured his right knee ligaments in April and couldn't play for the rest of the season.
In August 2015, Castillo was loaned again, this time to Italian team Frosinone.
Time in Mexico and Portugal
In 2017, Castillo joined the Mexican club Pumas UNAM and played there for one year.
On June 4, 2018, he moved to Portugal to play for Benfica, signing a five-year contract.
In February 2019, Castillo returned to Mexico and joined Club América. He made his league debut for América a few days later.
In August 2021, Castillo was loaned to the Brazilian team Esporte Clube Juventude until the end of the season.
