Exploring Nieuw-Vennep's Population
Nieuw-Vennep is home to over 31,000 people as of 2021. The town is divided into two main parts. There is the older part of town and a newer area called Getsewoud. Each of these areas has about half of the town's total population.
How Nieuw-Vennep Grew
Before the Getsewoud area was built, in 2001, Nieuw-Vennep had around 17,886 residents. The creation of Getsewoud greatly increased the number of homes available. This led to the town's population almost doubling in size. The town's built-up area is about 3.71 square kilometers. It contains over 7,500 homes. The wider area around Nieuw-Vennep has a population of about 40,000 people.
The History of Nieuw-Vennep
Nieuw-Vennep gets its name from an old island called Vennip or Vennep. The name "Nieuw-Vennep" means "New Vennep." This town is one of two places officially started after a large lake, the Haarlemmermeer, was drained in 1852. This process turned the lake into dry land, known as a polder. The other town founded at that time was Hoofddorp.
Early Days and Nicknames
Until 1868, Nieuw-Vennep was known as Venneperdorp. Both towns changed to their current names around that time. The first people who lived in Nieuw-Vennep were farm workers. They faced tough living conditions. Because of these difficulties, the town was sometimes called De Krim. This nickname referred to the Crimea War, which happened between 1853 and 1856.
Development and Important Buildings
Hoofddorp became the main center for government and business in the municipality. Because of this, Nieuw-Vennep grew more slowly at first. An important building in the town's history is "De Witte Kerk" (The White Church). Its construction began on November 2, 1862. This church was started by the Dutch Reformed Church.
Understanding Nieuw-Vennep's Economy
Nieuw-Vennep is part of the Haarlemmermeer municipality. This area is one of the top 15% richest municipalities in the Netherlands based on income levels. Nieuw-Vennep's location is a big advantage. It is close to Amsterdam and the country's main airport, Schiphol. Schiphol Airport provides around 65,000 jobs.
Why People Choose Nieuw-Vennep
Many people who work in Amsterdam or other nearby cities choose to live in Nieuw-Vennep. They like its peaceful atmosphere and the family-friendly places it offers. This was mainly because Schiphol Airport was heavily impacted by the global situation.
