Nieuwerkerken is a small town, also called a municipality, located in Belgium. It's found in the Limburg province, which is a region in the country. The town is quite close to the larger city of Hasselt.
As of January 1, 2006, Nieuwerkerken had a total population of 6,606 people. The entire area of the municipality is 22.46 square kilometers. This means that about 294 people live in each square kilometer. This measurement is known as the population density.
Nieuwerkerken is made up of four smaller villages. These villages are Binderveld, Wijer, Kozen, and Nieuwerkerken itself. The current mayor, who is like the town's main leader, is Dries Deferm. He belongs to a political party called CD&V, which stands for Christian Democratic and Flemish.
The village of Wijer, which is part of Nieuwerkerken, was used as a filming location. It was where the first series of the television show De Werf (from the VTM channel) was filmed.
