Nigel Borland Love (born January 16, 1892, died October 2, 1979) was an amazing Australian who loved to fly planes. He also became a successful businessman, especially known for his flour mills. He held the rank of Wing Commander in the Royal Australian Air Force.

Early Life and World War I

Nigel Borland Love was born in South Kurrajong, New South Wales. His parents were John and Rebecca Love. After attending Sydney Boys' High School, he worked in his father's importing business. He even visited Britain for a year in 1912–1913.

When World War I began, Nigel joined the Australian Imperial Force in 1915. He started his flight training at the government flying school in Richmond. By January 1917, he became an officer and continued his training in Britain. In 1918, he was promoted to lieutenant. He served with the Australian Flying Corps in France. Later that year, he returned to England to become a flying instructor.

Starting an Aviation Business

After World War I ended, Love returned to Sydney in 1919. He teamed up with W. J. Warneford and H. E. Broadsmith to create a company called Australian Aircraft and Engineering Co. Ltd. They set up their business in Mascot.

Nigel Love was the first managing director of this new company. He worked hard to promote aviation in Australia. His company even supplied Qantas with its very first commercial aircraft. However, there weren't many customers for planes back then. Also, the government didn't offer much help to new aviation companies. Because of these challenges, the company closed down in 1923. The land they used for their airfield later became Kingsford Smith Airport.

A Career in Flour Milling

On June 4, 1924, Nigel Love married Phyllis Eloise Davey. He then joined her father's company, Edwin Davey & Sons, which was a flour mill. This was a big change from flying planes!

Nigel decided to start his own flour milling business. He registered a company called N. B. Love Pty Ltd. In January 1935, he built his own flour mill in Enfield. He also helped create the New South Wales Flour Millers' Trade Council in 1942. This council helped flour millers work together.

World War II Service and Politics

In August 1941, during World War II, Nigel Love was appointed a wing commander in the Royal Australian Air Force. He was put in charge of a special group called the Air Training Corps. This group trained boys aged 16 to 18 who were interested in aviation.

In 1943, he tried to enter politics. He ran as a Liberal Democrat in the Parkes area during the federal election, but he was not successful. From 1945 to 1946, he served as the president of the Air Force Association in New South Wales.

Later Business Ventures and Retirement

Nigel Love took over Edwin Davey & Sons in 1940. He also bought another flour mill in Boggabri in 1944. He continued to expand his business.

In 1952, he started a new company called Millmaster Feeds Pty Ltd. Then, in 1958, he launched N. B. Love Industries Ltd. This company grew quite large. In 1962, he sold N. B. Love Industries Ltd. to a company called George Weston Limited. After this, Nigel Love retired and moved to the Canberra region. He passed away in Killara in 1979.
