Nils Eberhard Svedelius (born 1873, died 1960) was a famous botanist from Sweden. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. Nils Svedelius was especially good at studying plants that live in the sea, called marine algae. He was known as a top expert in this field.

Nils Svedelius was born in Stockholm, Sweden, on August 5, 1873. His father, Carl Svedelius, was a senior judge. His mother was Ebba Katarina Skytte. In 1914, Nils married Lisa Thegerstrom. He passed away on August 2, 1960.

His Journey in Science

Nils Svedelius studied botany at Uppsala University. His teacher was Professor Frans Reinhold Kjellman. Nils earned his first degree in 1895 and another in 1900. He started teaching at the university in 1901. This was after he finished his special research paper, called a doctoral thesis. His paper was about Studies in the marine algae of the Baltic Sea.

Exploring the World of Algae

In 1902, Nils won a special scholarship to travel. He spent a year in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). There, he studied marine algae, mostly near the Galle region. He also visited Singapore and Java (part of Indonesia).

Nils Svedelius worked at Uppsala University for his whole career. He became a full professor in 1914. He retired from his work in 1938.

Special Awards and Recognition

Nils Svedelius received important honors for his work. In 1944, he became a foreign member of the Royal Society. This is a very old and respected group of scientists in London. In 1955, he was also made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This means he was recognized by another important scientific group in Scotland. These awards showed how much his work on marine algae was valued around the world.
