Nina Simone Vidal (born April 20) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. She is best known by her stage name, Nina Vidal.
In 2008, Nina Vidal released her first album, also called Nina Vidal. It quickly became very popular in Japan. Just six days after it came out, it was the most downloaded album on Japanese iTunes. It then became the number one Contemporary Jazz album in Japan. Five of her songs were in the top 10 most downloaded Jazz songs on iTunes.
In 2010, Nina Vidal released new songs like "Cigarette & Wine" and "My Love," which was written by Paul McCartney. These songs were from her second album, The Open-Ended Fantasy, released in September 2010. This album also became the number one Jazz album in Japan.
In July 2011, she released an album of cover songs called Love, Pop & Soul (The Cover Session Vol. 1). This album also reached the number one spot.
In September 2013, her first album, Nina Vidal, became the number one Jazz Album in Japan again. At the same time, her album The Open Ended Fantasy was the number six Jazz album. This meant she had two albums in the top Jazz albums that month. Her first album also reached number 25 on the Top 200 albums in Japan.

Nina Vidal's Music Journey
Nina Vidal was born in Queens, New York. When she was a student at New York University, she often went to open-mic nights. At one of these events, she met a musician and producer named Caté. Nina gave him her demo, which is a recording of her songs. Caté liked what he heard and agreed to produce some of her music. These songs later became an EP, which is a shorter album, called Do It Again.
Soon after, a Japanese music company called Uni-Village contacted Nina. They had heard her songs and wanted to sign her to their label to make a full album.
First Album Success
In 2008, Uni-Village released Nina Vidal's first album, Nina Vidal. It received amazing reviews. A magazine from Finland called The Soul Express said it was "A timeless masterpiece!" Adam Greenberg from Allmusic.com wrote that Nina Vidal was inspired by many classic female singers. He said she had a calm, strong style.
Nina Vidal's first album became the number one Contemporary Jazz album in Japan. It took the top spot from Norah Jones's album Come Away With Me. Nina held this number one spot for eight months straight. It also became the most downloaded album on Japanese iTunes in September 2008. Five of its songs were among the top 10 most downloaded Jazz songs in Japan. Nina was only 25 years old at the time.
More Albums and Chart Toppers
On September 15, 2010, Nina Vidal's album The Open-Ended Fantasy was released only in Japan. It became the number one Contemporary Jazz Album in Japan in less than 24 hours. Five songs from this album were on iTunes Japan's Top Ten Jazz Singles at the same time. This included the number one song "Cigarette & Wine," which Nina Vidal wrote herself. The album was released in the U.S. the next year.
In 2010, Nina Vidal signed a deal with Universal Music Japan to publish her music.
In July 2011, Nina Vidal released Love, Pop & Soul (The Cover Session Vol. 1) in Japan. This album was a collection of cover songs, and she worked with her partner and producer, Caté, again. On July 28, 2011, it reached the number one spot on iTunes Japan. This was Nina Vidal's third album in a row to reach number one in Japan.
In August 2011, The Open Ended Fantasy was released in Korea. Two songs from the album, "My Love" (written by Paul McCartney) and Nina's own song "Cigarette & Wine," became popular on the Korean Soul chart. They reached number five and number eight, respectively.
In September 2013, Nina Vidal's first album, Nina Vidal, became the number one Jazz Album in Japan once more. At the same time, her album The Open Ended Fantasy was the number six Jazz album in the country. This meant she had two albums in the Top Jazz Albums for September. On September 11, 2013, Nina Vidal released the song "Paint The Sky." This song reached number one on iTunes Japan on November 14, 2013.
Her next album, Silver Lining, was released in Japan on November 6, 2013. This album mixes jazz, world, soul, and pop music. It features instruments like the pedal steel guitar and harmonica. Nina Vidal wrote nine of the eleven songs on the album. Caté produced the album again. In less than 12 hours, it became the number one Jazz Album in Japan. Ten of the eleven songs from the album were in the Top 100 Jazz Singles within four days.
On December 18, 2013, Village Again & CCG Recordings released the album Covers in Japan. It became the number one Jazz Album in less than three hours. This was Nina Vidal's sixth number one album and her second number one album in two months.
On March 26, 2016, Village Again released the album Best Of Nina Vidal. This album included one new song called "It's Time," which Nina Vidal wrote and produced. It reached number one on the iTunes Jazz Album chart in Japan in less than five hours. This made it her seventh number one album in eight years.
Nina Vidal's Popularity in Asia
Nina Vidal is much more recognized and admired by audiences in Asia than in her home country, the United States. Her success began in 2004 when Uni-Village records released her first album.
