Nine Peaks is a large mountain found on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It gets its name because it has many different peaks or high points. This mountain is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Tofino and 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) southeast of Big Interior Mountain.
Exploring Nine Peaks: A Look Back
Even though people were busy mining for valuable minerals near Della Lake and Big Interior Mountain before the 1950s, there are no records of anyone climbing Nine Peaks during that time. The very first time someone officially climbed to the top and recorded it was in July 1955. This successful climb was made by a group from the Alpine Club of Canada, led by Syd Watt.
How Can You Reach Nine Peaks?
Reaching Nine Peaks is a challenging adventure, mostly for experienced hikers and mountaineers. They usually start their journey from Della Lake. There are two main routes to get to Della Lake, and both are quite difficult and not used very often:
- Route 1: From Della Falls
If you start at the bottom of Della Falls, you can follow a faint path. This path goes up the left (south) side of the falls. It's a very steep and mossy climb. You might even need to grab onto bushes and tree branches to help you get up!
- Route 2: From Bedwell Lake
Another way is to start from Bedwell Lake. From there, you would first climb Big Interior Mountain. After reaching the top of Big Interior Mountain, you would cross over to its south summit, which is called Marjorie's Load. Finally, you would go down to a pass located west of Della Lake.
