Nitzan Horowitz (Hebrew: ניצן הורוביץ; born 24 February 1965) is an Israeli politician and former journalist. He served as Israel's Minister of Health from 2021 to 2022. He was also the leader of the Meretz political party. Before his political career, he was a well-known journalist, working as a chief U.S. correspondent for the Israeli News Company.
Horowitz served two terms in the Knesset, which is Israel's parliament, from 2009 to 2015. He was a member of the Meretz party. He also worked as a foreign affairs commentator for Channel 10 news. In 2013, he ran for mayor of Tel Aviv. In June 2019, he became the leader of Meretz. He stepped down as Meretz's leader in July 2022.

Early Life and Education
Horowitz was born in Rishon LeZion, Israel, in 1965. He studied law at Tel Aviv University. After finishing his studies, he began his career as a journalist.
Journalism Career Highlights
Horowitz started his journalism career reporting on military affairs. He worked at Army Radio as an international news editor from 1983 to 1987. Later, he joined the Hadashot newspaper as a foreign affairs editor.
Working at Haaretz
In 1989, Horowitz moved to Haaretz, a major Israeli newspaper. He continued to work as a foreign affairs editor there. From 1993 to 1998, he was a Haaretz correspondent in Paris, France. He covered news about the European Union. Then, from 1998 to 2001, he was a correspondent in Washington, D. C., in the United States. After returning to Israel, he became the chief foreign affairs columnist for Haaretz.
International Reporting at Channel 10
When Hadashot 10 (Channel 10 news) started in 2002, Horowitz helped create its international news desk. He made documentary films, including one about the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami and another about the search for Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan. He also regularly appeared on Channel 10's current affairs show, London et Kirschenbaum, to discuss global news.
Documentary Series and Environmental Work
In 2008, Horowitz created and directed a documentary series for Channel 10. It was called WORLD: The Next Generation – Nitzan Horowitz in search of tomorrow. This series explored big trends that could shape the future. These included the challenges of an ageing population, how cities can be more sustainable, and new developments in technology in places like China and India.
Horowitz was also involved in environmental issues. In 2007, he received the Pratt Prize for Environmental Journalism for his work.
Political Career Journey
In December 2008, Horowitz left Channel 10 to become a candidate for the Meretz party. He ran in the 2009 Israeli legislative election. He aimed to work on issues like protecting the environment and improving public transportation. Meretz won three seats in the elections, and Horowitz became a member of the Knesset.

In 2009, Horowitz proposed a bill to allow civil unions for all couples in Israel. He was re-elected to the Knesset in the 2013 Israeli legislative election. In October 2013, he ran for mayor of Tel Aviv but did not win. In 2014, he received an award for being an outstanding parliamentarian from the Israel Democracy Institute. He did not run in the 2015 Israeli legislative election.
Leadership of Meretz and Minister of Health
In June 2019, Horowitz won the election to become the leader of the Meretz party. He led the party in the September 2019 Israeli legislative election. In 2021, he became the Minister of Health in the government led by Naftali Bennett. He stepped down from his Knesset seat to focus on his ministerial role.
As Minister of Health, Horowitz took action to ban certain practices in February 2022. He also supported a decision by the Israeli High Court regarding rules in hospitals during Passover. After the Knesset was dissolved and new elections were set for November 2022, Horowitz announced he would step down as Meretz leader. He ran in the 2022 Israeli legislative election but lost his seat when Meretz did not get enough votes to enter the Knesset.
