Nokiiwin Tribal Council facts for kids
The Nokiiwin Tribal Council is a special group that helps five First Nations communities in the Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada. Think of it like a support team! Their name, Nokiiwin, comes from the Ojibwe language and means "work" or "employment."
This council works to give advice and training to these communities. Their goal is to help the First Nations manage their communities better and find more opportunities for their people.
How the Council Works
The Nokiiwin Tribal Council started in 2008. It was created to serve five Ojibwe First Nations in an area covered by the Robinson-Superior Treaty. Since it began, one First Nation left the council, but another joined. This means the council now mostly focuses on communities around Lake Nipigon within that treaty area.
Many of the First Nations that are part of the Nokiiwin Tribal Council are also members of another big group called the Union of Ontario Indians. This Union is a larger organization that represents many Anishinaabe First Nation governments across Ontario.
