About Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek
Where They Live
Their home is on the Rocky Bay 1 reserve. A reserve is a special area of land set aside for a First Nation. This reserve is located near a community called Greenstone, right next to Macdiarmid.
Their Community and Leaders
In October 2008, there were 678 people registered as members of the Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek. About 327 of these members lived on their own reserve land. The community is led by a Chief, who is like a mayor for the First Nation. Their current Chief is Gladys Thompson. The Chief works with a group called the council to make decisions for the community.
Working Together
The Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek is part of several important groups. They are a member of the Nokiiwin Tribal Council. A Tribal Council helps different First Nations work together on common goals. They also belong to the Union of Ontario Indians. This is a larger group that speaks up for many Anishinabek First Nations in Ontario.
The First Nation is also part of Waaskiinaysay Ziibi Inc.. This is a company that helps with economic development. It means they work to create jobs and improve the economy for five First Nations around Lake Nipigon.
A Look Back: History
Spirit Bay TV Series
In the 1980s, a television show for First Nations children called Spirit Bay was filmed right here in the community. It was a popular show that shared stories about Indigenous life. Today, the modern school in Rocky Bay is named the "Spirit Bay School" to remember the TV series.
Focus on Education
Education is very important to the Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek. In June 1994, the leaders of the Anishinabek Nation met at the Rocky Bay First Nation. They decided to create the Anishinabek Education Institute (AEI). This institute helps provide education for their people, especially for students after high school.
