Nordwestmecklenburg (which means Northwestern Mecklenburg) is a special area called a Kreis or district. It's located in the northwestern part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a state in Germany. This district is right on the coast of the Baltic Sea and shares a border with the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The city of Wismar is almost completely surrounded by Nordwestmecklenburg, even though Wismar is its own separate city.

The district of Nordwestmecklenburg was created in 1994. This happened when several older districts were joined together. These included the districts of Gadebusch, Grevesmühlen, and Wismar. Some smaller parts of the Sternberg and Schwerin-Land districts were also added.

Understanding the Nordwestmecklenburg Coat of Arms

DEU Nordwestmecklenburg COA
The official coat of arms for Nordwestmecklenburg.

The coat of arms for Nordwestmecklenburg tells a story about its history. On the left side, you can see the head of a bull. This bull's head is a symbol often used for the region of Mecklenburg.

On the right side of the coat of arms, there is a bishop's crosier. A crosier is a special staff carried by a bishop, who is a high-ranking church leader. This staff represents two important historical church areas: the diocese of Ratzeburg and the diocese of Schwerin. The Ratzeburg diocese later became known as the Principality of Ratzeburg in 1648.

A designer named Heinz Kippnick created this coat of arms. It was officially approved and granted on July 1, 1996.

Towns and Municipalities in Nordwestmecklenburg

Nordwestmecklenburg is home to many towns and smaller communities. These places are organized in different ways for local government. Some towns and municipalities manage themselves, while others are part of larger groups called Ämter. An Amt is like a local administrative union that helps smaller towns and villages work together.

These places handle their own local government without being part of an Amt.
