Norma Daniela Candal Penedo (born April 10, 1927 – died February 5, 2006) was a famous actress and comedian from Puerto Rico. Many people remember her best for playing the funny character Petunia in the TV show La criada malcriada.

Early Life and Education
Norma Candal was born in 1927 in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Her parents were Eladio José Candal and María Isabel Penedo. She grew up on a sugar plantation where her father worked as an accountant.
Norma went to the Sacred Heart School in her hometown. When she was just 9 years old, she acted in her very first school play for Christmas.
College and Career Path
Later, Norma Candal went to the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. There, she earned a degree in Humanities. She first thought about a career in politics. She even planned to study political science.
However, Norma received a special scholarship. This scholarship allowed her to study at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.. She changed her mind about politics and decided to study theater instead. She earned her Master's Degree in Theater. After finishing her studies, Norma returned to Puerto Rico.
Besides acting, Norma Candal was also a teacher. She taught both literature and acting.
Becoming "Petunia"
In 1965, Norma Candal started working in television. She was hired by Rafael Perez Perry to host a TV show called En Alas de la Imaginacion. This show aired on WKVM TV Channel 11. Soon after, she joined Tommy Muñiz Productions at Channel 4 WAPA TV.
Rise to Fame
During this time, Norma Candal became very well-known in Puerto Rico. She worked on several popular shows. These included Aquí con Norma (Here with Norma) and El Show del Mediodía (The Midday Show).
Her most famous role was in the show La Criada Malcriada (The Rude Maid). In this show, she played a funny character named Petunia. Petunia was a simple-minded maid, and this role made Norma Candal a household name. She also hosted or co-hosted many talk shows.
Taking a Break
In 1970, there was a strike against Tommy Muñiz Productions. This meant Norma had to leave the show. She then joined ASTRA Productions and worked on a couple of shows there.
Norma Candal stopped working in television for several years. This was because she had to have a serious heart surgery. She had a valve replacement during this time.
In 1980, Norma Candal worked for Cardinal Luis Aponte Martínez at the Cathedral of San Juan.
Return to Television and Theater
In 1985, Norma Candal returned to television. She starred as Doña Tere in the show La Pensión de Doña Tere (Mrs. Tere's Boarding House).
She also acted in many plays. Some of these plays included the Spanish version of Steel Magnolias, The Letters of Mozart, The Old Maids of San Sebastian Street, and Kisses on the Forehead.
Later Career in Films
Norma Candal also acted in movies. She played different roles in the films Díos los Cría 1 and its sequel. These movies are known as God Creates Them, parts 1 & 2. The first movie was released in 1979, and the second in 2004. In between these films, she also appeared in La Guagua Aérea (Flight of Dreams) in 1993.
Passing Away
On February 3, 2006, Norma Candal had an accident at her home in Trujillo Alto. She fell and hit her head. She was taken to Pavia Hospital in San Juan. Sadly, she had more health problems due to blood loss.
Norma Candal passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2006, at the age of 78. She was buried next to her mother at Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. She is survived by her two children, Norma and Andres Jr.
