History of Normangee

How Normangee Began

In the early 1900s, new railroads were being built across Texas. The Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway and the Houston and Texas Central Railway were constructed between Houston and Dallas around 1904–1905. These railroads passed through land owned by Robert Rogers. This land was about two miles west of an older community called Rogers Prairie.

Naming the Town

Because the railroads needed towns every eight miles, a new town was planned. On January 26, 1907, S.B. Phillips officially recorded the plans for this new town. It was built where the Old San Antonio Road met the two new railroads. The railroad officials decided to name the new town after Norman G. Kittrell. He was the county judge of Leon County at that time. Since there was already a town named Norman, Oklahoma, the new Texas town was named Normangee.
