Norridge is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It's located within Leyden Township. In 2020, about 15,251 people lived there. Norridge and its neighbor, Harwood Heights, are special because they are completely surrounded by the city of Chicago. This is why Norridge is sometimes called the "Island Within a City." The current leader of Norridge is President Daniel Tannhauser.

How Norridge Got Its Name

The name "Norridge" was suggested by a local resident, Mrs. Link. The first part, "Nor," comes from Norwood Park Township. The second part, "Ridge," comes from the nearby town of Park Ridge.

A Look Back: Norridge's History

Before it was called Norridge, the area had a few interesting nicknames. People sometimes called it "Goat Village" because a local resident had a goat farm there. It was also known as "Swamp" because there weren't many streets, and the land was often wet and swampy.

Norridge started as a small area of about 80 acres. It stretched from Ozanam Avenue to Olcott Avenue and from Irving Park Road to Montrose Avenue. In 1948, the people living there decided to officially make Norridge a village. This was important because it stopped the city of Chicago from taking over the area.

That same year, Karl Kuchar became the first President of the new village. The 1950s were a time of big changes for Norridge. New sidewalks, streets, and sewers were built. These improvements helped the village grow and develop. In 1954, Norridge also added more land to its north side.

Norridge is close to the Cook County Forest Preserves, which are large natural areas. It used to have several horse stables, like Happy Days Stables. Most of these stables were gone by the late 1970s.
