History of North Adams
The area where North Adams is now was first settled in 1835. A man named William Cutler moved there from Niagara County, New York. He opened a tavern, and the community became known as Cutler's Corner.
The community got its own post office on June 27, 1848, still called Cutler's Corner. But on May 1, 1850, the post office's name was changed to North Adams. This was because it was located in the northern part of Adams Township.
In 1871, the community was officially mapped out and named North Adams. It became an incorporated village in 1881. This means it officially became a town with its own local government.
