North American Aviation F-86 Sabre facts for kids
The F-86 Sabre, also known as the "Sabre jet", was a famous American fighter plane. It was built by a company called North American Aviation. This powerful jet first flew in 1947.
The F-86 Sabre became very important during the Korean War. It was designed to fight against another fast jet, the MiG-15. The F-86 had special "swept wings" which helped it fly much faster than older planes.

What is a Fighter Jet?
A fighter jet is a military aircraft built for air-to-air combat. This means its main job is to fight other planes in the sky. Fighter jets are usually very fast and can turn quickly. They carry weapons like machine guns or missiles.
Design and Speed
The F-86 Sabre was a big step forward in aircraft design. Its most important feature was its "swept wings." Older planes had straight wings. But the F-86's wings angled backward from the fuselage.
This swept-wing design helped the F-86 fly much faster. It could even fly close to the speed of sound. This was a huge advantage in air battles. The F-86 was one of the first planes to use this modern wing shape.
The Korean War
The F-86 Sabre played a key role in the Korean War (1950-1953). It was the main fighter jet used by the U.S. Air Force. Its main opponent was the Soviet-built MiG-15.
Pilots often called the area where these jets fought "MiG Alley." This was a part of North Korea where many air battles happened. The F-86 and MiG-15 were very similar in performance. This led to many exciting dogfights.
F-86 vs. MiG-15
Both the F-86 Sabre and the MiG-15 were fast, jet-powered fighters. The MiG-15 could climb faster and fly higher. But the F-86 was better at diving and turning at high speeds.
American pilots flying the F-86 often had better training. They also used a special radar gunsight. This helped them aim their weapons more accurately. These factors helped the F-86 achieve many victories.
After the War
After the Korean War, the F-86 Sabre continued to be used. Many countries around the world bought or built their own Sabres. It served in air forces for many years. Some countries used it until the 1970s.
The F-86 Sabre became a symbol of the early jet age. It showed how much aircraft technology had changed. It helped pave the way for even more advanced fighter jets.
