The North Branch Gounamitz River is a river located in the northwestern part of New Brunswick, Canada. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger river called the Gounamitz River. The Gounamitz River then joins the Restigouche River.

This river flows through two main areas in New Brunswick:

  • Restigouche County, specifically Saint-Quentin Parish.
  • Madawaska County, in Rivière-Verte Parish.

A forest road runs along the east side of the river for its entire length.

Where the River Starts

The North Branch Gounamitz River begins high up in the mountains. Its source is in a forest area, on the southern side of a mountain peak that is about 599 metres (1,965 ft) tall. This starting point is in Saint-Quentin Parish in Restigouche County.

The river's source is located:

  • About 8.3 kilometres (5.2 mi) northeast of the border between Saint-Quentin Parish and Rivière-Verte Parish.
  • About 27.0 kilometres (16.8 mi) south of the border with the province of Quebec.

How the River Flows

The North Branch Gounamitz River flows through a forest. It generally runs alongside the Kedgwick River to its southwest. The lower part of the river flows between two smaller streams: Létourneau Creek on the east and Cherry Creek on the west.

The river travels for about 18.5 kilometres (11.5 mi) in total. Here's how it flows:

  • For the first 2.8 kilometres (1.7 mi), it flows east in Saint-Quentin Parish (Restigouche County) until it meets another small stream.
  • Then, it turns south for about 8.6 kilometres (5.3 mi), passing by a logging camp, until it meets another stream.
  • Next, it flows southeast for about 3.9 kilometres (2.4 mi) until it reaches the border of Rivière-Verte Parish (Madawaska County).
  • Finally, it continues southeast for about 3.2 kilometres (2.0 mi) in Rivière-Verte Parish until it joins the main Gounamitz River.

Where the River Ends

The North Branch Gounamitz River flows into the northern bank of the Gounamitz River. This meeting point is in Rivière-Verte Parish, Madawaska County.

This spot is located:

  • About 21.4 kilometres (13.3 mi) northwest of where the Gounamitz River itself joins another larger river.
  • About 43.1 kilometres (26.8 mi) northeast of the city of Edmundston.
