North Highlands is a community in Sacramento County, California, United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP) because it's a special area defined for gathering population data. North Highlands is part of the larger Sacramento metropolitan area. In 2020, about 49,327 people lived there.

North Highlands is located in California at 38°40′23″N 121°22′22″W / 38.67306°N 121.37278°W / 38.67306; -121.37278. It covers an area of about 8.8 square miles (22.8 square kilometers), and all of it is land.

North Highlands Climate

The climate in North Highlands is known as a hot-summer Mediterranean climate. This means it has hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.

About the Community

North Highlands has its own school system. Until 2008, there were two separate school districts. One handled kindergarten through 6th grade, and the other managed grades 7 through 12. In 2008, these two districts joined together to form the Twin Rivers Unified School District. The main high school in the area is Highlands High School. There are also many elementary and charter schools nearby.

The community is mostly a residential area, meaning it has many homes. There are also some business and industrial areas. These are mainly located around what used to be McClellan Air Force Base. This base closed in 1995 and is now a civilian business center and airport called McClellan Business Park. The main roads that run through North Highlands are Watt Avenue, Elkhorn Boulevard, and Walerga Road.
