A Look Back: The Amphitheatre's Story
The land where the amphitheatre now stands used to be open fields. It was even part of a big dairy farm at one point. Later, the area was developed as an industrial park. However, it was left empty for several years.
Then, a company called Universal Concerts decided to build a concert venue there. They got approval from the city of Chula Vista. The industrial park was cleared away to make room for the amphitheatre. In the late 1990s, a plan was made to build both a water park and a concert venue.
Opening Day and First Concerts
The water park, which is now Sesame Place San Diego, opened in 1997. The concert venue, first known as Coors Amphitheatre, opened on July 21, 1998. It was the first venue of its kind in San Diego County. Just a month later, on August 21, 1998, the English pop group Spice Girls performed to a sold-out crowd. It was the amphitheatre's first full house!

Changes in Ownership and Names
Over the years, the amphitheatre has had a few different owners and names.
- In late 1999, House of Blues bought all of Universal Concerts' venues, including the Coors Amphitheatre.
- Then, in July 2006, Live Nation Entertainment bought House of Blues. This included eight amphitheaters and eleven clubs.
- In April 2008, the venue changed its name to Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre. This happened after Cricket Wireless bought the naming rights.
- In January 2013, the name changed again to Sleep Train Amphitheatre. This was part of a five-year deal with Sleep Train.
- On February 16, 2017, it became the Mattress Firm Amphitheatre. This was due to a partnership with Mattress Firm.
- Finally, on November 1, 2018, the venue was renamed the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre. This new name came from a ten-year sponsorship deal with North Island Credit Union of San Diego.
What the Venue Offers
The North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre has different types of seating. There are 9,468 seats with backs, like in a movie theater. There are also 10,024 spots on the lawn where people can sit on blankets or chairs. This large capacity makes it a popular place for big concert tours. During the spring, summer, and fall, it hosts many top music acts.
