North Lake is a beautiful lake located near Atwell, New York. It's a very important lake because it's the starting point, or "source," of the Black River.
This lake is one of several in Herkimer County. Its water has a medium acid content. This means it's a bit acidic, which affects the types of fish that can live there. Even so, you can still find some cool fish species. These include tiger muskie, white sucker, perch, and bullhead. If you enjoy boating, you're in luck! Boating is allowed on North Lake. There's a small boat launch with a gravel base in Atwell for easy access.

Exploring the North Lake Area
North Lake is surrounded by an interesting area known as the North Lake Easement Tract. This large area covers about 11,490 acres. It's also sometimes called the J.P. Lewis Tract.
Location and Ownership
The North Lake Easement Tract is found in the Town of Ohio, also in Herkimer County. Currently, a group called Heartwood Forestry Fund owns this land. The tract wraps around the northern part of North Lake.
Natural Features of the Tract
This land has rolling hills, just like the nearby forest preserve areas. Besides the lake itself, the tract is home to many creeks, brooks, and ponds. You can also find two mountains here:
- Canachagala Mountain, which is 2,606 feet (794 m) tall.
- Golden Stair Mountain, standing at 2,391 feet (729 m).
These mountains are located in the northwestern part of the tract.
Public Access and Rules
While much of the area is natural, there are some rules about where people can go. The public is not allowed to enter certain private areas. These "exclusion areas" are around 35 camps located on the North Lake Easement Tract. It's important to respect these private properties.
