Fire Department Changes
In 2014, the mayor of North Riverside, Hermanek, suggested a plan to change how the fire department worked. The idea was to have a private company, Paramedic Services of Illinois, Inc., handle the firefighter jobs. This company already provided paramedic services for the village.
This plan caused a lot of discussion and was met with strong opposition from the Fire Fighters Union Local 2714 and many residents. The village government decided to move forward with budget changes that included lower salaries for firefighters.
In September 2014, Mayor Hermanek announced that the village would go to court. They wanted to confirm their right to end the firefighters' contract, which had expired in April 2014. The village stated that they had tried to reach a new agreement but needed to move ahead with the privatization plan to keep the village financially stable.
