North Roe is a small village located at the very northern tip of the Northmavine peninsula. This area is part of the Mainland of Shetland, a group of islands in Scotland. North Roe is also a special protected area because of its important natural environment.

The village is quite small. In 2011, its school had fewer than twelve students. You can reach North Roe by following the A970 road. This road runs all the way from the south to the north of the Shetland mainland. The last nine miles of the road leading to North Roe are a single-carriageway.

Nature and Wildlife in North Roe

The land around North Roe is very important for nature. It includes a large area of moorland, which is a type of open, uncultivated land. This moorland is part of a bigger protected site called Ronas Hill-North Roe and Tingon.

Protecting Wetlands and Birds

The Ronas Hill-North Roe and Tingon area is recognized internationally as a special wetland site. It is protected under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. This agreement helps to conserve wetlands around the world.

The area is also a Special Protection Area. This means it is protected under the Birds Directive. This directive aims to conserve wild birds and their habitats in Europe.

Important Bird Area

Because of the many birds that live and breed here, North Roe has been named an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International. This title highlights places that are crucial for bird conservation.

Many types of moorland-breeding birds can be found here. These include the red-throated loon, which is a type of diving bird. You might also spot the great skua, a large seabird known for chasing other birds to steal their food. The fast-flying merlin, a small falcon, also makes its home in this protected area.
